삶의 모습을 CG로 승화시키는 3D Artist Marek Denko
매우 사실적인 CG 작업물을 선보이는 Marek Denko를 Chaos Group이 인터뷰를 진행했다. 삶의 모습과 관찰을 통한 진지한 일상의 모습들을 CG 작업으로 만들어 내는 3D Artist 작가인 Marek Denko를 만나보자.
Marek Denko is a 3D artist from a small town in the Slovak Republic. His love for computer graphics began in 1991 with his Atari 800XL, and in 1995 he discovered 3D Studio R4. After graduating from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology, he and colleague Peter Sanitra cofounded the studio NOEMOTION in Prague.
Marek Denko는 슬로바키아의 작은 마을 출신의 3D 아티스트다. 컴퓨터그래픽에 대한 그의 애정은 1991년 Atari 800XL 컴퓨터와 함께 시작됐고, 1995년에는 3D Studio R4를 알게 됐다. Brno 공과대학에서 토목공학부를 졸업한 후에, 그의 동료 Peter Sanitra와 함께 프라하에 NOEMOTION이라는 스튜디오를 설립했다.

WHY 3D VISUALIZATION?
왜 3D 시각화인가?
Since childhood I’ve loved to draw and paint, and then, when secondhand computers arrived in Eastern Europe, I somehow managed to get one. Thanks Mom! Discovering the world of computer graphics was amazing. I started to write code and created my first pixel art on an 8-bit Atari. I started using 3D Studio on my first PC and later moved on to 3ds Max. Despite my studies in civil engineering, 3D became my life path. I started my journey as an enthusiastic amateur and eventually became a full-time 3D artist, running a studio with my friend and cofounder Peter Sanitra.
어렸을 적부터 저는 그림 그리기와 색칠하기를 좋아했습니다. 그리고 중고 컴퓨터가 생기면서, 저는 어떻게 해서든지 무언가를 만들려고 했어요. 엄마 덕택에, 컴퓨터그래픽이라는 놀라운 세계를 알게 됐죠. 저는 코드를 작성하기 시작했고, 저의 첫 번째 픽셀 아트를 8-bit Atari 컴퓨터에서 만들어 냈어요. 또한 나의 첫 PC에서 3D Studio를 사용하기 시작했었고, 나중에 3ds Max로 옮겨 갔죠. 토목공학을 공부했음에도 불구하고 3D는 나의 인생의 목표가 되었어요. 저는 열정적인 아마추어로서 탐험하기 시작했고, 결국 풀타임 3D 아티스트가 되었죠. 그리고 제 친구이자 공동설립자인 Peter sanitra와 스튜디오를 운영하고 있습니다. 
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I am constantly observing and contemplating, and sometimes an image will just pop into my head. The important part is not to force it and to recognize it when it happens. Life isn’t quite as simple as it once was, so it can be harder to clear my mind, but if something strikes me, I’ll do it!
저는 지속적으로 관찰하고, 생각하다보면, 가끔 어떤 이미지가 머릿속에서 떠오릅니다. 중요한 점은 그것을 강제적으로 떠올리지 않고 자연스럽게 인식하는 것입니다. 삶은 그렇게 단순하지 않아서 이미지가 떠올려지는 것처럼 분명하게 인식하기에 어려울 수 있지만 어떤 것을 내가 떠올리게 되면 저는 그것을 하려고 할 것입니다!
Sometimes I’ll browse the web for inspirational images and save them into my inspiration folder. One time I actually searched for “inspiration” in Google and found an image I loved and used later for a personal project!
가끔 저는 영감을 불러일으키는 이미지를 구하기 위해 웹을 검색하고, 나의 영감 폴더에 저장합니다. 언젠가 저는 실제로 구글에서 “영감 inspiration”을 검색했고, 하나의 이미지를 발견했는데, 마음에 들었고, 나중에 개인 프로젝트를 위해서 그 이미지를 사용했었습니다.

“Hektor is the nickname for this diesel locomotive in Slovakia, and during a recent visit to my hometown, I took a lot of reference photos. I had studied railway construction while I was at University, so this image a tribute to my old friends and professors.”

“When I moved from Slovakia to Italy, I started to miss the nice, romantic mornings I had experienced while studying in Brno. The air was fresh and cold and sun was so strong and low, you had to squint in order to see anything.”

HOW DOES PHOTOGRAPHY INFLUENCE YOUR WORK?

Generally, I’ll head outside to take photos for reference and textures, and if I happen upon something nice, I’ll take the shot!
일반적으로, 저는 레퍼런스와 텍스처용도로 사용하기 위해서 사진을 찍으러 밖에 나갑니다. 그리고 만약 가끔 어떤 멋진 것을 발견하면, 저는 그 장면을 촬영합니다!
HOW DOES V-RAY FIT INTO YOUR WORKFLOW, AND WHICH FEATURES DO YOU USE MOST OFTEN?
어떻게 V-Ray를 당신의 작업과정에 넣으며, 어떤 기능들을 주로 자주 사용하나요?
From the moment I started using V-Ray, I’ve never looked back. Typically, I use Linear Workflow, the Irradiance Map and Light Cache for GI, VRayMtls, VRayBlendmtls, Render Elements, and the V-Ray Frame Buffer. I’ve developed a thorough understanding of the DMC sampler settings, and I’m using distributed rendering on daily basis. Having 3ds Max without V-Ray would be like having a car without wheels!
제가 V-Ray를 사용하기 시작한 순간부터, 저는 결코 뒤돌아보지 않았습니다. 일반적으로, 저는 리니어 작업과정(Linear Workflow)을 사용하고, GI를 위한 Irradiance Map과 Light Cache, VRayMtls, VRayBlendmtls, Render Elemnets, 그리고 V-Ray Frame Buffer를 사용합니다. 저는 DMC 샘플러 세팅을 철저하게 이해하도록 연구했었고, 거의 매일 분산 렌더링(Distributed rendering)을 사용하고 있습니다. V-Ray 없이 3ds Max를 사용하는 것은 마치 핸들 없는 자동차를 운전하는 것과 같습니다!

전체 씬은 모델링 됐다. 어떤 사진도 사용하지 않았고, 모든 모델링과 텍스처링은 오토데스크의 3ds max 2012에서 작업됐다. 색보정은 포토샵에서 이루어졌고 렌더링은 V-Ray를 사용했다. 이 작업에서 vrayfog를 직접적으로 렌더에 처음 사용했는데, 렌더타임이 높은 만큼 정말 가치가 있었다. 어떤 플러그인도 사용되지 않았다.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE STARTING IN 3D?
3D를 시작하고 있는 이들에게 어떤 조언을 줄 수 있나요?
Work hard every day, and do a little more than your neighbor… success will find you.

모든 아름다운 것은 훨씬 멀리에 있다.
“이 이미지는 가족과 친구들로부터 멀리 떨어져 있는 어떤 감정을 포착한 것입니다. 낯선 사람들에 둘러싸인 채로, 부드럽고 흐릿한 태양빛이 감도는 무명의 공항 대기 장소는 당신이 사랑하는 누군가로부터 떨어져 있음을 지속적으로 일깨워준다.”
일반적으로 이 작업은 2009년에 3ds Max에서 작업하고 V-Ray sp1.8a로 렌더링 했다. 하늘을 제외하고 모든 것이 3D로, 색보정과 후반작업은 fusion과 Photoshop을 이용했다. i7 975 CPU, 12Gb 램에서 5000 x 2570 px의 해상도로 렌더링 했다. 대략 15시간이 걸려 렌더링 했다. 나에게 멀리 떨어지지 않았으면 하는 나의 아름다운 가족을 위한 작품이다.
